Action on Curriculum launched by government

“Is our curriculum relevant to students?
Is it responsive to their needs?
Will it meet the needs of students when they transition to the world of work or higher education?
What are we doing well?
Where can we improve?”

These are the questions driving Alberta Education’s latest initiative, Action on Curriculum: Curriculum Standards and Process Redesign. The initiative’s goal is to ensure that Alberta’s curriculum (including programs of study, balanced assessment tools, and learning and teaching resources) remains responsive and relevant.

The Action on Curriculum project is part of Alberta Education’s continuing effort to transform education and grows out of Alberta Education’s initiatives: Inspiring Education, Inspiring Action on Education, Setting the Direction and Speak Out! Although the project is intended primarily to inform the government’s internal curriculum development process, it will eventually affect what teachers do in their classrooms.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association, as a major stakeholder and the voice of the profession, is participating in a series of Action on Education consultation meetings. The ATA wants to ensure that discussions are not restricted to what is covered in the mandated program of studies, but that they also address the hidden, implicit aspects of the curriculum that shape learning experiences for students and teachers.
